The beginning of the future Institute of Roses, Essential and Medical Cultures, Kazanlak was initiated in 1907, from the famous Bulgarian scientist-Konstantin Malkov. At that time, an experimental station of roses was established, which developed into an Institute 60 years later/ 1967/. The main purpose was to develop and assist rose production. At the same time with the first experiments of rose planting, experiments were made with a number of other essential and medical plants. The scientific research works with different officinal plants started later.
Today the Institute of Roses, Essential and Medical Cultures is a governmental organization under the direct subordination of the Ministry of Agriculture and Suppliement. It remains one of the main centers for research, applied service and subsidiary activities in the field of Essential Medical plants in Bulgaria.
The main activity of the Institute is in the field of research and includes trends as follow:
- Introduction, selection and reproduction of essential oil and medical plants
- Creation and support of a gene fund of 216 sorts, presented by 547 samples, 161 essential oil and medical plants varieties.
- Technology development for essential oil and medical plants.
- Raw materials processing technology of essential oil and medical plants.
- Licensed testing laboratory for analyses and certificate issuing for oils, drugs, plant extracts, sowing seeds, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
- Natural cosmetic production.
Over than 40 sorts of essential and medical plants are created. The Institute owns the copyright of 19 sorts of them.
The Institute of Roses, Essential and Medical Cultures is the main producer for Bulgaria of super qualitative sowing material of essential oil and medical plants, and the only scientific Institute in EU, which is interested in the area of Oil Bearing Rose.
